Amazon Ditching Fashion Site

Publicado: 2016-04-21

High-fashion shopping is taking a hit soon, as Amazon is shutting down its MyHabit website.

For those unaware, MyHabit allowed those looking to buy designer and generally trendy items a chance to acquire them for less. It, and many other sites like it—including rival Gilt—were a fairly big deal a few years ago, but their popularity has waned. (Gilt was acquired earlier this year by Saks Fifth Avenue for $250 million in cash, less than one-fourth of its valuation in its heyday.)

Amazon, which launched MyHabit back in May 2011, says the site will go away at the end of May, but had no further details.

"Fashion is one of Amazon's fastest-growing categories. As we continue to increase our breadth of selection and improve the customer experience on Amazon.com, we have decided to simplify our offering and will be closing MyHabit at the end of May. Our customers can now shop from Amazon Fashion's incredible assortment of brands across clothing, shoes and accessories — backed by award-winning service, free shipping and returns, and exclusive benefits for Prime members," Amazon told WWD.

Amazon says it will try to relocate MyHabit employees affected by the site's shutdown, within or outside the company.

The move comes after Amazon launched its own private-label clothing brands, teased by trademarks the company filed in Europe for seven different brands: Scout + Ro, James & Erin, Franklin & Freeman and Lark & Ro (to name a few). Earlier this year, the company's vice president of clothing for Amazon Fashion, Jeff Yurcisin, also hinted at the the company's future plans for the fashion world.

This Season's Newest Fashion Designer Is...Amazon?"For Amazon, we know our customers love brands, many of the brands in this room […] and that's where the lion's share of our business comes from. When we see gaps, when certain brands have actually decided for their own reasons not to sell with us, our customer still wants a product like that," Yurcisin said, as reported byBuzzFeed.

Amazon also recently launched its first daily, live streaming show called Style Code Live, which offers tips on fashion and beauty for those tuning into the daily 30-minute broadcasts.

The online retailer hasn't entirely given up on high fashion, just MyHabit. Last week, it was reported that Amazon and luxury clothing retailer Moda Operandi were teaming up to give the former's users a seamless way to purchase items from the latter. Not only can you now sign into Moda Operandi's website with your Amazon login, but you can also purchase items using Amazon Payments.
